Nice reflection, as always, Junkman! I appreciate your qualifications arriving at just the moment in which my annoying voice is saying, “But actually …”

I admit I feel pangs of guilt for not digging into the journal literature on this issue a little bit more but I know I would just never come out of the rabbit hole and I’ve got stuff to do to pay the bills too. It’s frustrating.

Yeah, and I think that “the research” on AI is struggling to keep up with the pace of AI’s evolution. What you read right now is almost certainly already out-of-date. I can’t speak on AI-detection, and I’d bet my understanding against any layman, but there’s no way I can contend with points other than philosophical conjecture (rather than technical accuracy). Your work here gave me some additional things to consider, so even if you feel guilty, you’ve inspired at least one person to think more deeply and critically about the topic. Thank you for that!!!

That is a high compliment and it makes it all worth it.

Yes there is a ton of research going on about this and for me the most fascinating one is just trying to figure out how AI is both like and unlike human intelligence. It gets to some very profound questions. It’s going to make us think about ourselves in a different way. Just the way it’s forcing a reappraisal of what the word “author” means is bigger than a lot of people realize.

But actualies can be good! My entire career was about helping people to understand hard to understand things especially medicine and health. I’m idealistic enough to think that this can help other times I think the only thing people want is to be told they are right. We’ll see.
